Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Schema Therapy

Schema therapy is a therapeutic modality that incorporates techniques and concepts from different therapeutic schools. It is an evidence-based approach, having as its founder Jeffrey Young. The concept of a schema can be looked at as a specific way in which an individual has internalised an experience, which can be both positive or negative in its nature. Imagine a schema as a sensitive area on your arm, and every single time someone touches or gets a hold of your arm, that area becomes painful. Whenever we encounter situations that bare a resemblance to events from our past, our schemas become active, and they determine a certain behavioural response aimed at counterbalancing the effect of the schema being triggered. Such behavioural or attitudinal response is called a mode. Fundamentally, schemas can be looked at as needs left unmet throughout our development, and those unmet needs determined the formation of maladaptive schemas, which as a result created the need of coping mechanisms or modes. Schema therapy is considered to be a trans-diagnostic model, meaning that it can be used across a wide range of specific diagnosis, because its model considers a diagnosis as an individual-specific manifestation of that particular individual’s unmet needs. Schema therapy aims to address those unmet needs, being a relation-based modality, focusing on the therapeutic alliance between the client and the therapist, and the alliance itself becomes a contributor to the healing process.

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is a therapy treatment designed for people who experience difficulties in managing their emotions and who may have found unhelpful ways of coping. DBT aims to teach specific skills and help build a life worth living.

The treatment focuses on four core skills:

1. Mindfulness

The skills taught are drawn from traditional mindfulness and incorporate different types of meditation practices. Mindfulness is central to DBT and focuses on the states of mind known as “emotion mind” and “rational mind”, aiming at balancing them which leads to the third state of mind known as “wise mind”.
